Baby Safety Month Celebrated at Scott Memorial Hospital
Free Prenatal classes offered in September in honor of Baby Safety month.
Whether this is your first pregnancy or your third, all expecting parents have questions and concerns.  Scott Memorial Hospital would like to ensure that you have a positive birthing experience by offering a free prenatal class on September 25 from 1pm to 4pm.  All expecting mothers and their birthing partners are invited to attend.

Clifford Nay, President of Scott Memorial Hospital explains, “For those planning a delivery at another facility, this class usually costs $35.  By dropping this fee, we will be able to reach more families.  We hope that by celebrating Baby Safety Month, others will take a moment to ensure that their little ones have a safe environment to grow and learn.”

By attending this class, you will gain knowledge about prenatal care, labor, your hospital stay, breathing techniques, post partum for care for mother and child, and much more.  Participants will also have the opportunity to view the delivery and post partum rooms.

With over 120 years of combined nursing experience, the Obstetrics Department at Scott Memorial Hospital specializes in happy, healthy babies.  To register, please call (812)752-8528.

Sleep Studies Can Provide Much Needed Answers

The Sleep Lab at Scott Memorial Hospital, helping patients who struggle with sleep disorders find quality rest.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night.  If a person is getting inadequate rest, many diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke may occur.

Insomnia and Sleep Apnea are the two most common sleep disorders.  Symptoms may include headaches, loss of energy, snoring, irritability, and trouble concentrating.  Dr. Mohammed Hasnain stated, “Recent studies have shown that driving while sleep deprived can be just as dangerous as driving while under the influence of alcohol.”

In order to diagnose and treat sleep disorders, many physicians suggest participating in a sleep study.  Dr. Kheder Kutmah explains that sleep studies are not just for adults, “Children who have been diagnosed with ADHD need to have a sleep study.  Often times, we are able to improve their ADHD symptoms just by treating the sleep disorder.”

During a Sleep Study, patients are monitored with a Polysomnogram (PSG).  This machine is able to measure brain activity, eye movement, oxygen blood levels, heart rhythms, breathing and muscle movement all while the patient is sleeping.  Neva Randolph, Director of the Sleep Lab and Cardiopulmonary Department at Scott Memorial Hospital explained “The Sleep Lab at Scott Memorial Hospital was designed to look like a hotel suite.  Patients have access to a private bathroom and are encouraged to bring comfort items from home such as their favorite pillow and magazines.”

If you would like more information on a sleep studies, call your healthcare provider or schedule a visit to the Medical Specialty Clinic at Scott Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Kheder Kutmah specializes in Pulmonology and Sleep Studies.  He is available on Mondays and can be reached at (812)752-8592.  Dr. Mohammed Hasnain specializes in Neurology and Sleep Studies.  He is available on Wednesdays and can be reached at (812)945-1429.

Scott Memorial Hospital Finishes $232,000 Renovation Project
When designing the new patient rooms, Scott Memorial Hospital wanted to enhance patient safety while also creating a space that is bright and uplifting.  From top to bottom, each room went through a complete transformation.  All new ceilings, flooring, showers and doors were installed.  Each room was painted white with an accent wall of yellow star, soft lavender or sweet orange.  We would like to extend a special thank you to the Scott Memorial Guild.  For years, the Guild has helped fund renovation projects.

These rooms were then furnished with new furniture including bedside tables, over the bed tables, recliner chairs, and chairs that pull out into beds.  James Vaughn, Director of Building Services stated, “While shopping for new furniture, we made sure it was both comfortable and functional.  We also focused on items like lighting, mirrors and accessories.  These little details really make the rooms special.”

The new beds have built in alarms which can help staff monitor those patients who may be confused or at risk of falling.  These beds also have the capability to monitor a patient’s weight without the patient being inconvenienced.  Other safety additions include a new nurse call system, and ADA Assist bars.

Clifford Nay, President of Scott Memorial Hospital said, “I am very pleased with the renovation project.  These updated rooms will offer our patients a quiet and comfortable place to rest and heal.”

With this project completed, Scott Memorial Hospital is now focusing on another renovation expected to begin early August.  This renovation will take place in the Emergency Department wait area.  With a budget of $30,000, this renovation will include the installation of a window where patients will be greeted by a Unit Secretary.  To ensure quality care, the Unit Secretary will make sure that patients in need of critical care are admitted promptly.
