Physician Honored for 35 Years of Service
The physicians and staff at Scott Memorial Hospital would like to acknowledge Dr. Wayne Pretilas’ 35 years of service in which he has provided quality Anesthesia and Pain Management to thousands of patients, served on the SMH Medical Executive Committee, contributed to patient education, and assisted in the development of the Surgery Department. The life and career of Dr. Pretila reflects a strong commitment to serving his specialty, patients, and Scott County. Scottsburg Family Physician, Shane Avery, has enjoyed working with Dr. Pretila for many years stating, “He is always available and willing to help, even at two in the morning. Dr. Pretila is a tremendous asset to the hospital.”
Dr. Pretila decided to attend Medical School in the Philippines after being encouraged to do so by his cousin who was a talented physician. After graduating from Medical School, Dr. Pretila moved to the United States where he completed an Internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Cleveland Ohio.
In 1973, Dr. Pretila went to Mount Sinai Hospital where he completed a two year residency in General Anesthesia and two years later he traveled to Akron’s Children’s Hospital to do a year focusing on Anesthesiology and Pediatric Intensive Care. Dr. Pretila spent the last year of his Residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland OH, where he received additional training in Anesthesiology and Pain Management.
Dr. Pretila and his wife Edna moved to Scott County in 1976 where they built a life and raised a family. Together, they enjoyed watching their children grow up in Scottsburg where both of their sons, Dale and Noel played sports.
“I have seen Scott Memorial grow a lot over the last 35 years,” Dr. Pretila explained, “The new addition to the surgical department has been a major asset. I am very happy to be here. The doctors and nurses are friendly and do a great job.”

National Infant Immunization Week
Scott Memorial Hospital will be observing National Infant Immunization Week from April 23rd to 30th. Since 1994, NIIW has served as a call to action for parents, caregivers, and healthcare providers to ensure that infants are fully immunized.
Director of Obstetrics at Scott Memorial Hospital, Carrie Leach explained, “Children under five are especially vulnerable to disease because their immune systems are still developing.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fifteen diseases can be prevented through childhood immunization, including hepatitis A and B, measles, rubella (German measles), mumps, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, and pneumococcal (bacterium that causes bacterial meningitis and blood infections). The CDC offers vaccination schedules for all ages as well as a “catch-up” schedule for those who have fallen behind. The CDC recommends that all newborns receive the Hepatitis B vaccine prior to discharge from the hospital.
The OB department at Scott Memorial was recently awarded a Bronze Award after receiving excellent scores on the Hospital Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Policies and Practices Evaluation.
“In the last year we have given 100% of the infants that were delivered at our facility their first Hepatitis B vaccine. We take pride in making sure our mothers and babies are safely cared for,” Leach said.
To get more information regarding immunizations, please contact your physician or visit www.cdc.gov/vaccines. For more information about The Everitt Women’s Pavilion at Scott Memorial and their Prepared Childbirth classes please call 812-752-8592.

SMH Selected to Help Educate Indiana
Scott Memorial Hospital has been selected by the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT) to participate in a state-wide initiative to promote their Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness License Plates.
Beth Knapp, Executive Director of IBCAT explained that SMH was chosen to participate for several reasons, “The IBCAT grant program at Scott Memorial has been very successful primarily due to the passion of Project Director Hope White. In addition, one of IBCAT’s goals is to fill any funding gaps, especially for rural and underserved areas. Scott County falls into both of these categories.”
Monies raised through the sale of these license plates will go toward the funding of mammography screening programs for the uninsured and underinsured women throughout Indiana. Since 2006, the IBCAT grant has awarded SMH over $50,000. This amount has made it possible for 450 mammograms, with 5 resulting in a breast cancer diagnosis.
Two SMH team members have been interviewed and will be featured in an upcoming Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness License Plate promotional video, CFO Angie Doan and Project Director Hope White.
“I personally support the Breast Cancer License Plates for several reasons,” Stated Doan, “Over half of the proceeds go toward providing screening mammography, and secondly I can happily say that I am a 5 year breast cancer survivor myself. I celebrate that I was able to have early detection and have not had a reoccurrence.”
Also included in this video will be the inspirational story of Flossie Crowe, Salem IN resident and IBCAT Grant recipient. She shares how Breast Cancer has impacted her life and what receiving this grant has meant to her and her family. After having an initial screening, just one year later, her breast was “full of cancer” and she urges all women that “if something does not feel right, don’t be afraid to get screened.”
“We were honored to work with IBCAT,” White explained, “At Scott Memorial we do our best to educate the public about breast cancer and prevention. It is exciting to think that with each license plate that is sold, lives will be saved in our community and all over Indiana.”
The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust grant is funded solely on Breast Cancer License Plate sales. Each license plate costs $40 and $25 of that goes directly to the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust. The IBCAT video will be featured on both www.breastcancerplate.org and www.in.gov/bmv. For more information on applying for a grant funded mammogram please call 754-1391.

SMH Cardiac Rehab Nationally Certified
Since 2004, the Scott Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation Program has been awarded Program Certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This voluntary certification process recognizes programs that have been reviewed by the AACVPR national board and have completed the rigorous standard of care requirements.
Scott Memorial Hospital Certified Cardiac Vascular Nurse, Rebecca Roth explains, “We have to follow strict policies and procedures in order to keep our certification. This ensures that our patients have access to the most current treatment options.”
Sara Lewis, Cardiac Rehab Exercise Tech and Team Member of 30 years explained that once their patients have completed their program, they are always welcome to come back and visit, “I always tell them to stop by so we can monitor their blood pressure and check their weight. If our patients ever need anything we will always try our best to help them.”
“I love working in Cardiac Rehab because of the ongoing care we give” Roth explained, “This gives us a unique opportunity to build relationships with our patients.”
Cardiac rehab programs are designed to limit the physiological and psychological effects of cardiac illness, reduce the risk of further cardiac incidences, and improve the patient’s condition and quality of life. The SMH Cardiac Rehab Center offers monitored exercise sessions, stress management, dietary counseling, medication review, and smoking cessation counseling. Call 812-752-8521 for more information.

Heart Attacks More Common in Winter
Scott Memorial Hospital would like to encourage everyone to be “heart smart” this winter. When it gets cold, people are used to experiencing an increased amount of colds and flu, but it is also important that people realize it is also the season for increased heart attacks.
Dr. Juan Ortiz, Cardiologist with River Cities Cardiology and member of the Scott Memorial Medical Executive Committee stated, “One theory for this is that cold air causes blood vessels to constrict as the body tries to prevent heat loss. This narrowing of the blood vessels can cause a rise in blood pressure which can lead to less oxygen flowing to the heart.”
When this natural response combines with a strenuous activity, such as shoveling snow, it can strain the heart, triggering a heart attack in those at risk. When heading outside, be sure to dress properly, avoid overexertion, and be sure to take frequent breaks.
According to the American Heart Association, symptoms of a heart attack may include pain, discomfort or a squeezing sensation in the chest, pain in the arms, back, neck, or jaw, shortness of breath, nausea or a cold sweat. Dr. Ortiz, explains that people should not wait to get help, “It is always best to be cautious, if someone is experiencing heart attack symptoms they should call 911 or go to the ER to get checked out immediately.”
To schedule an appointment with River Cities Cardiology please call 812-752-3424. Their office in Scottsburg is open on Mondays and Thursday and is located in the Medical Arts Building.

Scott Memorial Begins First Phase of Meditech
Scott Memorial is pleased to announce that the first phase of Meditech, an electronic health records system, has been initiated. The hospital and its patients are expected to experience many benefits with this new computer system.
Angie Doan, Vice President of Finance at Scott Memorial explained, “Meditech has been specifically built to fit the needs of Scott Memorial and its patients. For the past year, Scott Memorial team members have been working diligently to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible.”
One of the biggest advantages to Meditech is that it has the capability to integrate all of the departments within the hospital. Hospital staff will be able to access patient information, reports, forms, and test results all in one location, ensuring that patients’ records remain confidential and accurate.
Meditech also links the hospital computer system to those in physician offices. This means that when a patient gets a test done at the hospital, their physician will be able to view those results as soon as they are entered.
Thirteen departments including Registration, ER, Lab, Radiology, Billing, Financials, HR, Payroll, Coding, Materials, Cardiopulmonary, Rehab, and Med/Surg have started using Meditech. The remaining departments will be switched over in several more phases. This project is expected to be completed in 2012. The US Government is mandating that all hospitals convert to an electronic health record system and Medicare is expected to help fund the project in late 2011. This project will be funded initially by hospital reserves.
Megan Gregg, Clinical Resource Nurse at Scott Memorial stated, “I feel most of our team members and physicians are adjusting well to Meditech. Staff members and Physicians will continue to evaluate the new system and changes will be made if and when issues are identified.”

Scott Memorial OB Department Receives Award
Given by the Indiana Department of Health, the Obstetrics Department at Scott Memorial was awarded a Bronze Award after receiving excellent scores on the Hospital Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Policies and Practices Evaluation. This award is given to hospitals that follow the states “Best Practices” in preventing Perinatal Hepatitis B Infection in both expecting women and their babies.

I have never worked with more passionate nurses and physicians.” The Obstetrics Department at Scott Memorial has 18 nurses and 4 delivering physicians. Those who deliver at Scott Memorial can expect individualized attention and quality care. Patient satisfaction scores continue to be in the 95th to 99th percentile among other Press GaneyHospitals.
