Charitable Contributions: Making Memories Work

When Scott Memorial Hospital grows, there are common threads that help fuel the expansion. Community support is a vital element that helps the hospital meet community medical needs. Charitable donations that help the hospital grow are often given in memory of a loved one who has been helped by the hospital.
Such was the case when Scott Memorial added a surgical wing in 1989. Dwight Chamberlain, a strong supporter of the Mayor’s beautification program and many other Scottsburg community projects wanted to do something to help honor the memory of his father.
“My father was more than 80 years old when he went to Scott Memorial with gallstone problems in the early 1980’s,” said Chamberlain. “We were both super impressed with the technical ability the hospital. This was augmented with the fantastic hometown bedside manner of his physician, Dr. McClain.
Chamberlain’s father eventually moved to Florida and finally passed away.
“I decided then and there that that I would make the hospital a regular part of my civic contributions, Chamberlain said. “Every year, I go to Cliff (SMH President Cliff Nay) and ask what they need the money for that year. It has all been put to good use. The checks always come with a letter of instructions, and I always check back into where my contributions go to see that they used they way they are intended. Scott Memorial always uses the money the way they say they will use it.”
The first donation Chamberlain made in the memory of his father was in the mid 1980ties, and helped drive the surgical expansion. He has made frequent additional gifts totaling more than $25,000 since then.      Whenever Scott Memorial is ready for a new construction project, Chamberlain is there to help. In addition to the surgery project, he gave support when the hospital enlarged the Emergency Department a few years ago. He stands ready to help again with the major construction project about to start.
